How Many CE Credits Do Dentists Need? A Country-by-Country Guide (2026)

Dental CE credits requirements vary by country. In the USA, dentists typically need 30–60 hours per renewal cycle, set by individual state boards. UK dentists must complete 100 hours of verifiable CPD every five years through the GDC. Australian dentists need 60 hours over three years under the Dental Board of Australia. In Hong Kong, the DCHK requires 45 CPD points over a three-year cycle.

Continuing education is not optional for dentists — it is a legal requirement for maintaining your license to practice. But the rules differ depending on where you work. This guide breaks down the dental CE credits requirements for the USA, UK, Australia, and Hong Kong.

United States: Dental CE Requirements by State

Dental CE requirements in the USA are set at the state level. There is no single national standard. Every state has its own hours, mandatory subjects, renewal cycle, and rules on online versus in-person learning. Always check your state dental board’s current rules before planning your CE.

Typical Requirements by State

California: 50 CE hours every two years, with specific mandatory subjects including infection control and ethics.

New York: 60 credit hours every three years, with up to 18 credits allowable as home study. New York has updated its Mandated Reporter Training requirements through two separate laws: Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 required updated training on implicit bias, adverse childhood experiences, and virtual abuse recognition — all licensed dentists were required to complete this by April 1, 2025. Chapter 25 of the Laws of 2024 added protocols for identifying abuse in children with intellectual or developmental disabilities, with a completion deadline of November 17, 2026. Dentists who completed training after November 1, 2022 only need a short 15-minute addendum, available from approved providers from September 2025.

Texas: Varies by license type, with specific infection control mandates.

Maryland: 30 hours per two-year cycle. From 2026, the infection control requirement has increased from 2 to 3 hours.

Colorado: 30 hours per two-year cycle, with 16 hours required to be clinically based.

2026 Update: ADA CERP Standards Streamlined

Effective June 1, 2026, the ADA Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR) is reducing its recognition standards from 14 standards with 104 criteria to just 5 standards with 17 criteria. This is designed to encourage more innovative CE delivery methods, including online and interactive formats. Credits earned from ADA CERP-approved providers before this date remain valid.

Understanding CE Accreditation in the USA

When choosing a CE provider, look for one of these two nationally recognized accreditations:

AGD PACE (Academy of General Dentistry Program Approval for Continuing Education) is a nationally recognized accreditation, specifically designed to support dentists pursuing Fellowship (F.A.G.D.) and Mastership (M.A.G.D.) credentials. PACE-approved courses are accepted for license renewal across US states and Canada.

ADA CERP (American Dental Association Continuing Education Recognition Program) is awidely recognized standard. The ADA maintains a searchable directory of approved providers at ccepr.ada.org.

Both frameworks are widely accepted by state dental boards. When choosing a CE course, confirm which accreditation the provider holds and verify it is accepted in your specific state.

World Dental Academy features courses from AGD PACE accredited providers, including MicroDental Laboratories (Provider ID# 208572, approved through 6/30/2027) — so dentists on WDA can earn credits toward their F.A.G.D. and M.A.G.D. directly through the course providers.

United Kingdom: GDC CPD Requirements for Dentists

In the UK, all dentists registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) must complete Enhanced Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to maintain their registration.

Requirements for Dentists

100 hours of verifiable CPD over every five-year cycle.

A minimum of 10 hours must be completed in any two consecutive CPD years.

CPD must be planned using a Personal Development Plan (PDP) .

Annual CPD statements must be submitted via the GDC’s eGDC portal.

Recommended Core Subjects (per 5-Year Cycle)

Medical Emergencies — at least 10 hours (Cardiopulmonary ResuscitationCPR component should be completed annually) .

Disinfection & Decontamination — at least 5 hours.

Radiography & Radiation Protection — at least 5 hours.

Requirements for Other Dental Professionals

Dental therapists, hygienists, orthodontic therapists, clinical dental technicians: 75 hours per five-year cycle.

Dental nurses and dental technicians: 50 hours per per 5-Year Cycle.

2025 Update: Simplified CPD Documentation

In March 2025, the GDC simplified its CPD documentation requirements. Registration numbers are no longer required on CPD certificates, and signatures are no longer mandatory — electronic confirmations are now accepted. This makes it easier to use online course certificates as evidence of CPD completion.

Failure to comply with GDC CPD requirements can result in removal from the register, which means you cannot legally practice dentistry in the UK.

Australia: Dental Board CPD Requirements

In Australia, all dentists must be registered with the Dental Board of Australia, which operates under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Requirements for Dentists

60 hours of CPD over a three-year cycle.

The Board encourages an average of 20 hours per year.

The current CPD cycle runs from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2028.

At least 80% of CPD activities must be clinically or scientifically based.

What Counts as Clinical/Scientific CPD?

For an activity to qualify, it must relate to the scientific, clinical, or technical aspects of oral health care. Examples include clinical techniques, infection control, CPR, patient record keeping, oral health topics, and dental procedures such as endodontics, implantology, orthodontics, and restorative dentistry.

What Counts as Non-Scientific CPD? (Maximum 20% per year)

Non-scientific activities are those indirectly related to but supportive of dental care, such as practice management and dento-legal responsibilities. Financial wellbeing topics like marketing or personal finance do not qualify.

Flexibility and Variety

The Dental Board of Australia does not specify mandatory CPD topics, giving practitioners flexibility to choose activities relevant to their own scope of practice. However, a variety of activities is expected — you cannot rely on a single type of activity to meet your hours.

Requirements for Other Dental Professionals

The same CPD standard applies to dental specialists, dental hygienists, dental therapists, oral health therapists, and dental prosthetists. All must meet the same 60-hour requirement over the three-year cycle, with the same 80/20 clinical-to-non-scientific ratio.

For full details, refer to the Dental Board of Australia’s CPD resources page.

Hong Kong: DCHK CPD Requirements for Dentists

In Hong Kong, dentists registered with the Dental Council of Hong Kong (DCHK) are required to participate in a Continuing Professional Development program.

Requirements (2023–2025 CPD Cycle)

A minimum of 45 CPD points over a three-year cycle.

At least 6 of the 45 points must come from core CPD areas designated by the DCHK.

1 CPD point is generally equivalent to 1 hour of learning activity.

Can Online Dental Courses Count Towards CE Credits?

Yes — in most jurisdictions, online dental courses are accepted towards CE or CPD requirements, provided the course meets the relevant accreditation or quality standards. The specifics vary by country.

United States

Online courses from ADA CERP and AGD PACE recognized providers are accepted by all US state dental boards that mandate CE for license renewal. However, some states cap the number of hours that can be completed through self-study or home-study formats. Always check your state board’s rules on format restrictions before planning your renewal cycle entirely online.

United Kingdom

The GDC accepts online learning as verifiable CPD, provided the activity has clear learning objectives, anticipated outcomes, and a certificate confirming quality assurance. Since March 2025, the GDC no longer requires registration numbers or signatures on CPD certificates, making online course documentation simpler to use as evidence.

Australia

The Dental Board of Australia accepts online courses as CPD, provided the activity contributes to clinical or scientific knowledge. The Board does not mandate specific provider accreditation, but activities must genuinely support professional development and align with your scope of practice. The 80/20 clinical-to-non-scientific ratio applies regardless of delivery format.

Hong Kong

Online learning activities are generally accepted under DCHK’s CPD framework.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do dentists need to complete CE credits?

The frequency depends on your country and, in the USA, your state. UK dentists must complete a minimum of 10 CPD hours in any two consecutive years within their five-year GDC cycle. Australian dentists are encouraged to average 20 hours per year across their three-year cycle. US renewal periods range from one to three years depending on the state. Hong Kong operates on a three-year cycle.

What happens if a dentist does not complete their CE requirements on time?

Consequences vary by jurisdiction but typically include late renewal penalties, license suspension, restricted practice conditions, or removal from the professional register. In the UK, failure to meet GDC CPD requirements can result in erasure from the Dentists Register, meaning you cannot legally practice. Most regulatory bodies offer a grace period or remediation pathway, but relying on these is risky.

What records should dentists keep for their CE activities?

In all four countries covered here, dentists must maintain records of completed CPD activities including course titles, dates, hours or points, provider details, and certificates of completion. The GDC requires records to be kept for at least five years. The Dental Board of Australia conducts random audits and expects practitioners to produce documentation on request. Keeping a centralized digital record is the most practical approach.

Can a single CE course count towards requirements in more than one country?

It depends on the course’s accreditation and the rules in each jurisdiction. A course accredited by ADA CERP satisfies US state board requirements but will not automatically be recognized by the GDC or the Dental Board of Australia. Each regulatory body has its own criteria for acceptable CPD. Always verify with your local board before assuming cross-border recognition.

Can dentists complete all their CE hours online?

In most countries, a substantial portion of CE hours can be completed online. However, some US states cap self-study or home-study hours, and most regulatory bodies expect a mix of learning formats. The GDC and the Dental Board of Australia do not impose strict format limits, but they expect variety in your CPD activities. Check your local requirements before planning an entirely online CE schedule.
